The Realization of True Champions

Unless you have been stuck in a coup in Central Africa or you’re one of those snippy “I refuse to pay attention to anything that has to do with sports” types, then you most certainly heard about The Greatest Super Bowl Ever. (Not to mention the most watched.)

As an obsessive, die-hard, fanatic of the New York Giants – a third generation fan reared on stories of Fran Tarkenton and Rosie Grier and weaned on the greatness of Lawrence Taylor, Phil Simms and Harry Carson – I would be remiss not to celebrate the historic achievement of my Big Blue.

Oh my, oh my... Does It Get Any Better Than This?

Well, of course it does… but I haven’t experienced a Super Bowl win since I was eight, and the Yankees dynasty from 96’-‘00 was euphoric. In terms of sheer excitement and pure joy, yesterday’s win for my New York Giants ranks right up there for one of the most enjoyable games I’ve ever watched as a sports fan.

There were a few reasons why. The Giants played a very, very good football game, but in the end it was heart and sheer determination that won it for them. The defense withstood 36:00-24:00 time of possession and came out in the 4th quarter like, to quote the great Lawrence Taylor, “a bunch of crazed dogs.”

What made this win so much more enjoyable for me? Why, it ended the Cowboys season of course! The “great” Tony Romo (NOT ELI MANNING) became incredibly flustered, rubbing his eyes many times after plays that didn’t go as planned, yelling at his linemen, and taking two questionable sacks.

Oh and to go back to Eli Manning, he was once again phenomenal. His numbers remind me of Tom Brady… ahem, NOT the ‘07 out-of-this-world Tom Brady, but the early years Brady who managed games with perfection, making plays when needed but mostly picking a defense apart carefully and quietly throughout the game. This is exactly what Eli has done the last 3 games. Don’t believe me? Take a look at Brady’s numbers in his previous playoff games. Nothing spectacular until 2004. All he did was win games, exactly what Eli is doing. Now granted, Eli has to win a couple more (ahem, two to be exact) to be seriously compared to Brady, but its a worthy comparison to note.

On to Green Bay, where it looks it will be mighty cold!

But first, let’s all enjoy TO’s quivering lip…
