About Scotch & Politics

Scotch & Politics has come a long way since its early roots in the dorms of Boston University soon after the attacks of September 11 2001. It started as five guys – Andrew, Brendan, Jason, Mike, and Thomas – seeking meaningful discussions about the world and something better than cheap keg beer, but in time it became a weekly event on Thursday nights to debate the issues at hand. We discussed and argued about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, terrorism, religion, politics, social issues, morality, women, philosophy, ethics, baseball, football, hockey, and countless other things – all while exploring the world of well-crafted alcohol – from blended and single malt scotches to top-shelf bourbons and vodkas to the tasty beers ubiquitous in Boston’s Back Bay.

Our politics, values, ideas and ideologies cover a wide swath of philosophical, religious and political ground – and many of our ideas and beliefs have changed since we first met. We range from libertarian to Democratic to Republican and socialist, span the religious spectrum from atheist and agnostic to Jewish and Catholic and Protestant, and hail from New England, New York and the South.

After some of us graduated in the spring of 2004 and moved away from Boston to different parts of the country, we sought a way to keep in touch and keep arguing… er, debating. Out of necessity for good discussion about the 2004 presidential debates, we formed a message board to post our ideas and news that we found interesting or important. Finally, in 2007, we upgraded to the website before you today to begin generating more of our own writing and including more people in our discussions – from those commenting on our writing to actual guest writers.

Our posts vary from arguments and rants on political, cultural and social issues to reviews of music and liquor and beer to just about anything else that interests us. Often they are from ideological points of view, but just as often they can be practical or simply off the wall and fun.

We hope you enjoy what you read and please let us know your thoughts in the comment section below each post. Also, please bookmark us so that you remember to come back check us out again.
