Edwards Begins His Real Campaign

January 22, 2008 by Brendan · 4 comments

Great debate last night, I was very impressed with Hillary and Obama’s performances – Anybody can tell at this point that this is their race, and its going to go down to the wire.

An interesting side note caught my eye this morning - CNN’s Politicker blog reports that Edwards and Hillary had a “private meeting” after their debate last night – and no one knows what they discussed. It could have been the weather, it could have been about the pending stock market drop, it could have been about Tom Brady’s walking cast…

But this is John Edwards we’re talking about - so its easy to start rumors that he’s ready to sell out.

Last week, after his disappointing showing in Nevada, the talking heads on CNN started to throw around the “R-Word, as in “Re-Assess.” Its a position John is quite familiar with.

Now this week he’s teaming up with Hillary to bash Obama at the debate and then meeting up with her afterward for private meetings. There is no way this is a coincidence – its obvious at John Edwards has begun his campaign for Vice President, and he’s throwing his hat in Hillary’s ring and hoping for the best.

This is pretty familiar territory for Edwards, since he basically handed the Democratic nomination to John Kerry in 2004 by playing softball instead of…I don’t know… maybe challenging his record or something.

Expect Edwards to drop out, endorse Hillary, and (if she wins) end up her VP candidate.

    No way does this happen.

The Dems would throw a fit if Hillary picked the same guy who was on the LOSING 2004 ticket and didn’t carry his own state.

Don’t get me wrong. I love Edwards, and in fact I mailed my absentee ballot off today with my vote for him on it (I’m crossing my fingers that he doesn’t drop out before Feb. 5). I think it would be great if he were v.p. - if he doesn’t stage the comeback I am hoping for to take the nomination. However, while the Democratic party may not be Wade Boggs, I don’t see this is going over well with anyone who has ever considered the possibilitiy of an omen.

The v.p. nominee for the Dems has to be Richardson. It would be as crazy as Fred Thompson at a gay pride parade any other way.

Disagree with both of you. Edwards is staking himself out to be Obama’s VP. They have similar policy positions, and Edwards has generally held most of his fire for Clinton. It was only at this debate did he begin to target Obama, and it was because he sensed an opening. Hillary and Barack were sniping at each other and Edwards floated above like the wise sage.

Like a wise sage? How about the guy hanging back, trying to stay out of the way?

“How about the guy hanging back, trying to stay out of the way?”

That’s probably closer to it, but still that was the smart play. He is roundly accepted to have handily “won” that debate.
