So far I have written two articles on the Republican presidential candidates – Rudy Guiliani (whom I can’t stand) and John McCain (who I endorsed even though no one here likes him). The Republican nominees for President have offered me plenty of blog inspiration, probably because deep down I know that they’re all flawed (flaws = blog gold), and I am not sure any of them can win. The writing has been so easy lately that I even promised a post on Huckabee for this week; and even though Thomas beat me to it (posting on a Sunday no less!), I’m going to write one anyways.
First and foremost, I’m looking at Huckabee’s Creationist world view. But not because it’s a huge issue in this election. Its not. Let me repeat: CREATIONISM IS NOT A HUGE ISSUE IN THIS ELECTION. Know what’s a big deal in this election? Iraq, the potential of a recession, immigration, health care, and Social Security – these are big issues. But it needs to be discussed for no reason other than this quote….
“I believe God created the heavens and the Earth…I wasn’t there when he did it, so how he did it, I don’t know.
-Mike Huckabee, Presidential Candidate
…sounds a lot like this one:
”God created the sun, the stars, the heavens and the earth, and then made Adam and Eve. The Bible never says anything about dinosaurs. You can’t say there were dinosaurs when you never saw them. Somebody actually saw Adam and Eve. No one ever saw a Tyrannosaurus Rex.”
-Carl Everett, Baseball Crazy-Man
I know Huckabee didn’t mention dinosaurs in his quote – but the similarities are striking. This whole “Aw shucks, I didn’t see him do it!” mentality remains and it haunts me. To be honest, I would prefer it if my President didn’t share any of the same viewpoints as Carl Everett.
And therein lies the real issue behind the creationism debate – it’s the epitome of Mike Huckabee’s unelectibility. He can win straw polls in Iowa with the help of his religious base, but that’s not going to fly in New York, California, Minnesota, Michigan and Texas (ok maybe he’ll get Texas). Hell, in New Hampshire Huckabee is currently polling fourth place!
Here’s a great article in the Globe about the current issues Huckabee is facing as he shores up support, including a note that even the major right-wing religious organizations question his ability to win.
Look, Mike Huckabee seems like an honest, friendly, intelligent guy. He’s authentic. He’s easily the most likeable of all the candidates - I like him, religious people like him, Thomas likes him, the people of Arkansas like him, rapists like him. That’s a broad appeal, but its not broad enough to win anything at the national level. If Huckabee continues to succeed, his faults will come out and his opponents will use them to polarize the Republican Party. I cringe at the thought of him facing off against Hillary’s attack machine. I can’t imagine that his “”I may not be the expert as some people on foreign policy, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night” line is going to work when he’s trying to win votes on the national stage.
I roll with McCain. And so should the Republicans.
Also, in honor of the Ron Paul blimp coming to Boston this weekend here’s another airship crash picture for your enjoyment.

Also, here’s an addendum. Drudge thinks the Dems are holding back on Huckabee on purpose in hopes he wins the nomination.
